Credit note generator

A credit note reduces or cancels an invoice you have already sent, for returned goods, an overcharge or a discount agreed later. Enter what is being credited and the total credit adds up.

What goes on a credit note

  • Your business name and tax ID
  • The customer being credited
  • A credit note number and date
  • The original invoice number
  • Each item or amount being credited
  • The tax being reversed
  • The total credit and the reason for it

When to issue a credit note

Once an invoice has been sent, it should not be edited or deleted. A credit note is the correction: it records that the customer owes less than the invoice said.

If the invoice was made here, open it and use “Make a credit note”. Then remove the items that are not being credited, or lower the quantities.

Questions

Should the amounts on a credit note be negative?
No. Enter them as normal positive amounts. The heading “Credit Note” and the “Total credit” line already say the amount is in the customer's favour.
Are there tax rules for credit notes?
In many countries, yes: what a credit note must show, and the time limit for issuing one. This tool lays the document out. Check the rules with your accountant or tax authority.
What does it cost?
Creating, designing and saving documents is free and needs no account. The clean PDF, without the preview watermark, will be a paid download. Payment is not switched on yet, so that download is not available today.
