Lakh and Crore vs Million and Billion

India groups the first three digits, then every two: 1,00,000 is one lakh and 1,00,00,000 is one crore. Most other countries group every three digits: 100,000 is one hundred thousand and 10,000,000 is ten million. So 1 lakh = 100 thousand, 10 lakh = 1 million, and 1 crore = 10 million.

Writing an amount on a cheque

Write the words right after “Rupees” with no gap, add paise after “and”, and finish with “Only”. Make sure the words match the figure in the box exactly; banks can return a cheque when they differ.

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules asks for the total value and the tax, and most Indian invoices also print the total in words so the figure cannot be misread or altered. OwnInvoice adds it to every invoice automatically.

What is the difference between the Indian and international system?

The Indian system groups digits as 1,00,00,000 and uses Thousand, Lakh and Crore. The international system groups them as 10,000,000 and uses Thousand, Million and Billion. 1 Crore equals 10 Million; 1 Lakh equals 100 Thousand.

Paisa is singular and Paise is plural, so 0.01 is "One Paisa" and 0.50 is "Fifty Paise". The converter picks the right one.
